Wedding Planning in Northern NY

When planning your wedding, you'll create a lot of "to-do" lists. Below are some wedding resources designed especially for the Northern NY couple, and will help you cross items off your list sooner.

  • Becoming an "Official" Couple in New York State
To get married in New York State, you must obtain a New York State marriage license.

    • Where do I go to get my marriage license?
      • You can obtain your marriage license at your local city/town clerk's office.

    • What will I need to bring?
      • First of all, both of you MUST go and sign the license, so let your future spouse know and make a date of it. After all, it's your first step towards becoming an official couple!
      • Valid and current photo identification and proof of age (2 documents)- Bring with you either your certified birth certificate, baptismal record, naturalization record, census record AND either your driver's license, passport, employment picture or ID, or immigration record.

    • When should I get my marriage license?
      • You should get this aspect of your wedding done approximately one month before your wedding. In New York State there is a 24 waiting period to get married after your marriage license is obtained. Also, the marriage license is only valid for 60 days after filing for one, so you must be getting married before it runs out.

    • How much does a marriage license cost?
      • A marriage license varies from county to county, and fees usually range between $40.00 - $50.00. Check to see what forms of payment are accepted (cash, personal check, money order) as this also varies.

    • What if I'm not 18 years old yet?
      • If you are not yet 18 years old and wish to get married, you will need to have a parental consent form completed by both sets of parents. For further information, please click here.

    • Are blood tests required?
      • No, neither blood tests nor physical examinations are required for you to get married in New York State.

    • How do I get a certified copy of my marriage license?
      • Contact your local county clerk's office or request one by writing to:
        • Vital Records Section
New York State Department of Health
          Empire State Plaza
          Albany, New York 12237-0023
      • Fees may apply.
